Fullerenes - a special form of carbon, which was first discovered in scientific laboratories when trying to simulate the processes occurring in space, and later discovered in the earth's crust.
The fullerene molecule represents a spherical surface, which is formed from hexagons and pentagons. Nature has given a clear sequence of this compound — each hexagon borders on three hexagons and three pentagons, and each pentagon borders only hexagons. The carbon atoms that make up the sphere are linked together by a strong bond.
A team of scientists from the University of Pittsburgh for the first time showed that large carbon molecules, under a certain set of circumstances, behave as separate atoms of simple substances and are able to conduct an electric current no worse than metals.
It turned out that these molecules can hold an electric charge on themselves and transfer it to neighboring molecules, as happens in metal conductors of electricity. Thus, fullerenes are natural stores of electricity and other types of energy in space.
