Suffering from depression, people got a nasty surprise. American management control food and drug administration (FDA) received data of the unpublished studies, according to which the effectiveness of popular antidepressants has been exaggerated in some press articles. The emphasis in these articles was done on favorable results, but unfavorable suppressed. For Americans who have long called themselves "Prozac nation", this information can be a serious blow.

There is an opinion (particularly persistent in Soviet psychiatry, but not only) that "depressive psychosis" does not happen. There's "depressive syndrome". So any depression is a result of either purely mental someone (e.g., schizophrenia, or, if you prefer, chronic alcoholism), or (in particular) a purely physical ailment (e.g., stomach ulcers). Ie when recovery from the underlying disease, depression is by itself.
All the so-called antidepressant the essence of symptomatic drugs used, when the underlying disease is either not detected or not treated, and, in any way, by themselves unprofitable.
I'm fated to believe it.
Ie, I think no one new has been revealed, except that the emphasis is slightly different accents.
By the way, and what is offtopic?

Well, actually I, being a radio engineer, I can not be a psychiatrist.... However, too many "examples" in life was.
(1) the Word "depression" is ambiguous -- in the everyday sense it usually understand almost any "mood disorder" ("like the English spleen, in short - the Russian Blues"). In the medical sense-it is a very serious disease, in many cases requiring placement of the patient with special.the house under surveillance, "to hang".
(2) and "present" (the independent existence of which I do not believe, see above) depression and "mood disorders," he can provoke somatic diseases.
Of course, if we are talking about severe forms of depression ("severity" as a rule, visible to everyone) -- no one but a good psychiatrist will not help.
But if "similar to English spleen" ("everything sucks" -- "Yes, you've got a Fig?" -- "all") (the experience shows that the majority of psychiatrists in cases of this kind are prone to skarmlivanii sick pills) -- mayd-machine -- is a good chance.
By the way, here to determine the border of an independent psychiatrist and practices for "not myself" I would not dare.
I really would not like, but I'm afraid this topic will go in the enumeration of the names of medicines, and to whom that they had to -- I would like to believe that this will not happen, although it almost started.
And I wrote, because, in my opinion, the theme is not idle, sorry.

PS:: And that, by the way, amusing -- yet not a single person that is a professional / a certified psychiatrist and/or neurologist here did not speak. But it would be nice.

Yes, it would be nice. And while it is possible to note that modern psychiatry is dominated by the concept of determinirovannogo the vast majority of mental illnesses changes in brain biochemistry associated with impaired synthesis of neurotransmitters or their reception. But to dominate these views have become because as it turned out some Lek. substance inexplicably ( at the time ) to have a positive impact on the condition of patients with depression. Their effectiveness, as it turned out, was associated with an increase in the concentration of some of monamines. And went...I think that the problem of antidepressants is not their "bogus" inefficiency and numerous side effects ( In the era of evidence-based medicine, when are mashtabnykh randomizirovannye international, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies including these groups of drugs, talk about unfounded exaggeration of effectiveness is probably however too many over several decades has accumulated evidence to the contrary. The problem is neobosnovano, inept use, as usual. Of course, and conducted a comparative study of the efficacy and safety of antidepressants. And of course the case that the effectiveness of any drug is lower than what was calculated, but otherwise.
