Here,interesting...
Chemistry of lucid dreaming .
"New is long forgotten old". This aphorism fully reflect the current situation in the field of sleep physiology, because even in the ancient Indian epic (the Upanishads) was first heard the idea about the three forms of existence - wakefulness, quiet sleep and dreaming . Western science to understand and substantiate this fact, it took several centuries before the invention of electroencephalography (EEG), and then for decades for understanding of the results. But let's in order.
Studying such a mental phenomenon as lucid dreaming I was interested in the purely physiological factors which (at least theoretically) possible occurrence of this condition. Practical observations show that the person is in a state of emotional stress to a certain limit increases the sensitivity. This is immediately reflected in his dreams - they, at least, become more vivid and memorable. It is in these periods of life is most likely spontaneous occurrence of lucid dreams . But why? Finding objasnjenje (not one) of this phenomenon in esoteric terms, my interest went from the mental plane, full of subjectivity, the search for objective data, which led me to the field of neurophysiology.
Since the days of Pavlov, psychologists who study sleep have been searching for the so-called "sleep center". They were sure that this part of the brain to work in "awake mode" is irrelevant. However, modern research suggests that "the centers of wakefulness", and they are now known five or six, a mechanism built into sleep. Each of these centers is unique and the disruption of any of them kompensiruet at the expense of others and leads to coma, as incompatible with human consciousness. Activating the neurons in these parts of the brain through the synapses emit neurotransmitters - glutamic acid and aspartic acid, acetylcholine, noradrenaline, serotonin and histamine. Thanks to their coordinated work, we recognize ourselves in the state which is called waking.
But what is the switch that puts these centers in a "sleep mode"? It turned out that there are specific neurons that carry the brake activating. They secrete gamma-aminobutyric acid, which could be described as the main inhibitory substance of the brain. Four phases of sleep observed on the EEG of the brain, is nothing but the result of this braking. Every 90 min (from the moment of falling asleep) triggered something like a trigger and the whole system switches to the state of wakefulness or paradoxical sleep, which starts from the center, located at the rear of the brain. Mediators REM sleep are already known to us acetylcholine, glutamic and aspartic acid. Active be only one or two of the "center of wakefulness", using these mediators. Still other centers are inhibited. Accordingly, the activating mediators of these centres, norepinephrine, histamine and serotonin in the paradoxical sleep is not working.
Long before the clarification of the mechanisms of sleep attention of researchers drew the serotonin. He has been the subject of numerous experiments since the change in its concentration, the brain reacts very characteristic. An excessive amount of serotonin delays the onset of REM sleep and, therefore, dreams are not formed. The reduction of its level triggers , which very clearly illustrates the application of drugs, dramatically reducing the levels of serotonin. To be the place to mention that a similar result lead experiments on deprivation (suppression) the fast phase of sleep of 3-5 hours, subjects begin to hallucinate.
There is another category of researchers, with a particular interest in serotonin and the mechanisms of its action. It is the experimenters in the field of lucid dreaming . Their recommendations for eating food that contains amino acids or b vitamins, leading, ultimately, to increase the content of serotonin (together with the amino acid L-tryptophan). According to the researchers such a diet increases the brightness of dreams , their content and, most importantly, awareness.
Now let's try to piece together the fragments of all this, at first sight disparate, information.
Six centres of wakefulness-sleep activated by the six mediators (see diagram), determine our wakeful state. As you descend into sleep, the activity of most centers to be faltering. The result of this inhibition is slow-wave sleep. By the time the fast phase, these activated centers have only three mediators, except for serotonin. The next stage will see the inclusion of all of the other centers to go to the Wake, or another braking part of them to return to the NREM sleep - so runs the switch States mentioned in the Upanishads. It is here that comes in serotonin with its special properties. If the concentration in the brain is high enough (but not excessive), the physiologically favorable conditions for gaining state of consciousness, ie, serotonin activates another center of wakefulness before the "awakening" of the two remaining. Moreover, an overdose of serotonin will immerse us in the non-REM phase, but too small amount - you'll Wake up. Hence the elusiveness and trudnodostizhimye this condition - so fine line between a lucid dream from a waking state. For the final overcoming of this face, as we know from the practices of conscious efforts of mental order.
But what is relevant to the work of this mechanism has already mentioned, heightened sensitivity, increasing the likelihood of lucidity in dreams? The most direct. In a state of emotional stress in the brain aktiviziruyutsya neurons that produce the same serotonin.
For fans of "Technotronic dreams ", which uses immersion in a dream-like computer program MindController Demo to achieve the lucid state, it should be added that the use of wave synchronization (in particular alpha synchronization) is comparable with the increase in the level of neurochemical mediators in the brain. In particular for the serotonin is a specific the number + 21% from the initial level, which is another confirmation of the vitality of the above theory.
In my opinion this approach to the mechanism of awareness will help guide the search for objectively-controlled methods to achieve these States in a more concrete way. I would be interested to hear the opinion of other practitioners of the OS, based on their specific experience.

Ogromennoe thanks for the book!In my opinion this is the best I have ever read on this topic, many issues are understood, more intuitive mechanisms,a method of presenting information (conscious and unconscious)-this is a godsend,we were pleasantly surprised and impressed! Moreover, some aspects, even not related to the OS it became clear that pleases me immensely!!!
All the advice!
